With a simple turn of the knob it's possible to mechanically raise the limitation on the boost pressure. Turbo systems makeuse of an wastegate, this wastegate is spring powered to make it open at a certain boost, to release excessive boost pressure. This spring already partially opens during low boost which makes an useable part of boost getting lost.
With a boost controller you can fool the wastegate by making it think it is at a much lower boost, which makes it possible to raise the boost pressure of your engine, to gain some extra power. The gains can be compared to chiptuning, only for a much lower price.
